I feel I could reasonably secure the site, by separating the commerce from the display of the site. You certainly don't want to store credit card information on the same server that's serving up your web site. In fact, this would violate the terms of PCI, although many still do it. If you're just getting started and don't have the capital to setup a multi-tier ecommerce site, look into canned ecommerce solutions, like Yahoo store, eBay storefront, godaddy.com's quick shopping cart, or just use the tools of PayPal to incorporate into your site.
